Safety First: 3 Ways to Improve Your Site Safety This Year

Alex Kirkup-Lee • Feb 01, 2022

Something about the start of the year makes it feel like an ideal time to make a positive change. While site safety might seem like a mundane topic, it is also an essential consideration that you must get right to protect your business and employees.

Forklift accidents happen weekly, with around 1,300 accidents reported each year. But the sad truth is that around 70% of all forklift accidents could be prevented with adequate safety measures in place. Here are three steps you should consider to make your site safer this year.

1. Get a Site Survey

A site survey is an effective, fast and, did we mention, FREE, assessment of your site that will save you both time and money, as well as improve the productivity and safety of your site. We assess everything on your site, from equipment to racking and layout, to the site floor itself.

In terms of safety, we always assess a number of aspects, including assessing whether your site has adequate signage, if traffic routes are well defined and if there are guard rails or other methods for pedestrian segregation, and much more. It’s true that there are always ways you can be working safer.

Plus, site surveys can be extremely beneficial in helping you work as efficiently as possible, as our experts can advise you on the latest equipment to suit increased racking density, reach, and scale if your site changes, as well as efficiencies to be gained from your existing equipment. On top of that, if you move site, we can assess how your equipment can be best deployed to maximise productivity and maintain safety.

2. Stay On Top of Truck Maintenance

Forklifts can be complex machines and when worked hard in tough environments, parts can wear and tear or break over time. If not caught, this can lead to further issues down the line, causing unexpected breakdowns and costly repair bills.

At Welfaux, we’re a strong believer that prevention is better than cure. On average, the cost to repair a forklift is four times higher than the cost to properly maintain the equipment in the first place. Daily checks should be undertaken on your trucks, as well as a planned maintenance schedule to ensure your fleet is operating safely.

Our fully qualified forklift engineers are trained to identify potential risks and/or issues with your equipment. We are fully accredited to undertake LOLER inspections, as well as reactive and preventative maintenance and repairs.

Look at Your Training Plan

While we are confident in the quality of our materials handling equipment, we recognised that a tool is only as effective as the person that wields it. Organisations have a legal responsibility to ensure that employees are trained to operate forklift trucks and are tested by an accredited instructor. That being said, it is not enough to merely provide initial training when staff join. Refresher training is required, especially if job roles have changed or new equipment has been introduced.

At Welfaux MH, we provide high quality, cost-effective, accredited training courses on a variety of trucks and lifting equipment for all levels of experience. By undertaking training with us, your staff will increase their confidence and productivity, while ensuring a safer working environment for everyone on your site.
